History, Culture and Demographics

The present population traces its roots from the Alutiiq near Illnik and the old village of Kanatag near Becharof Lake. The community was the winter residence of a single family in 1903. Other families moved from surrounding communities in the early 1950s when a school was built.

A federally-recognized tribe is located in the community -- the Chignik Lake Village. Chignik Lake is a predominantly Alutiiq fishing village.

According to Census 2010, there were 50 housing units in the community and 27 were occupied. Its population was 94.5 percent American Indian or Alaska Native; 2.7 percent white; 2.7 percent of the local residents had multi-racial backgrounds.

Facilities, Utilities, Schools and Health Care

Treated well water is stored in a wood stave tank and is piped to all 32 households. The school has its own well. Approximately 70% of the homes are plumbed. Fifteen HUD homes are connected to a central sewer system with a waste pump and lagoon; the remainder use individual septic systems. Refuse is disposed of by residents in the unpermitted landfill. Chignik Lake Electric Utility generates power only during the summer months; in winter, electricity is purchased from the school district. Electricity is provided by Chignik Lake Electric Utility Incorporated. There is one school located in the community, attended by 25 students. Local hospitals or health clinics include Chignik Lake Clinic.  Chignik Lake is an isolated location it is part of the Southern EMS Region. Emergency Services have coastal and air access and is provided by a health aide.  Auxiliary health care is provided by Chignik Lake Rescue Squad (907-845-2253).

Economy

Fishing is the mainstay of Chignik Lake's economy. Some residents leave the community during summer months to commercial fish, crew, or work at the fish processors at Chignik. In 2011, two residents held commercial fishing permits. The people depend on subsistence hunting and fishing and utilize salmon, other fish, caribou, moose, and seal.

The 2006-2010 American Community Survey (ACS) estimated 321 residents as employed. The local unemployment rate was 13.5%1. The percentage of workers not in labor force was 38.3%1. The ACS surveys established that average median household income (in 2010 inflation-adjusted dollars) was $64,063 (MOE +/-$34,703)1. The per capita income (in 2010 inflation-adjusted dollars) was $16,347 (MOE +/-$6,153)1. About 14.0%1 of all residents had incomes below the poverty level.

Transportation

Chignik Lake is primarily accessible by air. There is a state-owned 2,800' long by 60' wide gravel airstrip; seaplanes may land at Chignik Lagoon. Regularly-scheduled and charter flights are provided. Goods are lightered, weekly during the summer and monthly during winter, to the lake via Chignik Lagoon and are then transported over land. The state ferry provides service to Chignik Lagoon four times per year. There is no harbor, dock, barge access, or boat haul-outs. Skiffs and ATVs are the primary means of local transportation. There is a strong regional interest in constructing roads between Chignik, Chignik Lagoon, Chignik Lake, and the city landfill.
