Location and Climate

Alcan is located just inside the Alaska border, southeast of Northway along the Alaska-Canadian highway. The community lies at approximately 62.661760° North Latitude and -141.161230° West Longitude.  (Sec. 04, T026N, R022E, Copper River Meridian.)   Alcan Border is located in the Fairbanks Recording District.

Alcan Border is in the continental climatic zone and the area experiences cold winters and warm summers. Average temperatures range from -27 to 69 °F.

 

History, Culture and Demographics

The name is derived from the Alaska-Canadian (Alcan) Highway.

The Alcan community consists of families employed by federal customs at the entry point into the U.S. and Alaska from Canada. Students attend school in Northway or are home-schooled through correspondence study.

According to Census 2010, there were 23 housing units in the community and 16 were occupied. 90.9 percent white; 6.1 percent of the local residents had multi-racial backgrounds. Additionally, 9.1 percent of the population was of Hispanic decent.

 

Facilities, Utilities, Schools and Health Care

Alcan residents derive water from a piped community well system and individual wells. A community sewage system serves the majority of households. A central generator distributes electrical power. Electricity is provided by Alaska Power Company. There are schools located in the community,  Auxiliary health care is provided by Alcan Rescue (907-774-2000 or 907-883-5111).

 

Economy

Most of Alcan's residents are employed by U.S. Customs. Call (907) 774-2252 for the U.S. Customs office and (867) 862-7230 for the Canadian Customs office.

The 2006-2010 American Community Survey (ACS) estimated 141 residents as employed. The public sector employed 100.0%1 of all workers. The percentage of workers not in labor force was 44.0%1


 

 

Transportation

The Alcan Highway connects through Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, to the lower 48 states or through Tok to Fairbanks and Anchorage.
