History, Culture and Demographics

The area was used by the Yup'ik Eskimos as a seasonal subsistence site. Called "Akiakchagamiut" in the 1890 census, the village had a population of 43 at that time. A post office was established in 1934. It incorporated as a second-class city on February 7, 1974. The city government was dissolved on January 31, 1990, in favor of traditional village council governance.

A federally-recognized tribe is located in the community -- the Akiachak Native Community. Akiachak is a Yup'ik Eskimo village with a fishing and subsistence lifestyle. It has a strong traditional community and was the first city in Alaska to dissolve its city government in favor of the Native village government. The sale, importation, and possession of alcohol is banned in the village.

According to Census 2010, there were 183 housing units in the community and 150 were occupied. Its population was 95.1 percent American Indian or Alaska Native; 3.5 percent white; 0.2 percent black; 0.2 percent Asian; 1.1 percent of the local residents had multi-racial backgrounds. Additionally, 0.2 percent of the population was of Hispanic decent.

Facilities, Utilities, Schools and Health Care

Currently 12 facilities and the school and teacher's housing are served by a piped system; most residents haul treated water from the washeteria. 25 households have honeybuckets hauled by the village; the others haul their own honeybuckets or use septic tanks. Electricity is provided by Akiachak Native Community Electric Co. There is one school located in the community,  attended by 197 students. Local hospitals or health clinics include Akiachak Native Community Clinic.  Akiachak Health Clinic is a Primary Health facility with river and air access.

Economy

The majority of year-round employment in Akiachak is in education and other public services. The Yupiit School District headquarters are located in the community. Residents rely on seasonal employment, such as commercial fishing, construction, and BLM fire-fighting. In 2010, 75 residents held commercial fishing permits, and some worked at canneries in Bristol Bay. Subsistence activities provide most food sources. Poor fish returns since 1997 have significantly affected the community.

The 2006-2010 American Community Survey (ACS) estimated 1991 residents as employed. The public sector employed 33.7%1 of all workers. The local unemployment rate was 25.2%1. The percentage of workers not in labor force was 34.2%1. The ACS surveys established that average median household income (in 2010 inflation-adjusted dollars) was $39,167 (MOE +/-$22,330)1. The per capita income (in 2010 inflation-adjusted dollars) was $12,996 (MOE +/-$2,676)1. About 27.6%1 of all residents had incomes below the poverty level.

Transportation

A state-owned 1,649' long by 40' wide gravel airstrip and public seaplane facility provides scheduled and chartered services year-round to Akiachak. Boats, snowmachines, and ATVs are used extensively by locals on the Kuskokwim River. A winter trail exists to Bethel (19 mi). Barges deliver bulk fuel and supplies during the summer.
